DAILY HOMEWORK
Homework – The key to your child's success! SPELLING WORDS and TEST There is a spelling test and a sight word test every Friday. The list of words will go home the Friday before. Please have your child practice these words every day. That can be by writing them, reading them, drawing them, putting them in abc order or in sentences. Knowing how to read and write these words is essential for more success in Reading and Writing!! SIGHT WORDS and TEST - 5 minutes a day. 10 words per week will be given. Tests are on Fridays. Create index cards with sight words on them to help them practice. No class time is given, so this is all homework. READING - All students are required to read every night. 1st graders are to read for at least 20 minutes. They are then to record simply the book title they read on their “Reading Log” which should stay in their blue folder. This “Reading Log” is due to me every day. If students do not bring in their reading log to show me they have been reading, they will flip their color card or possibly miss recess. This is to help teach them responsibility and that homework is part of their job associated with school. This daily reading is the most important thing your child can do to become a better reader and writer. It is critical! SOUNDS - CRITICAL TO DO To learn to read and write, you must know the sounds of the English language. Although we do practice the sounds every day in class, all children in this classroom are academically behind where they should be in this area. It will take time at home to help get your child caught up. Please spend time on BOTH of the following websites several days each week to help your child learn their sounds. www.starfall.com and http://www.phonogrampage.com MATH Please work on whatever skill we worked on in math. You may ask you child what we did. If you aren't sure, working on addition, using flashcards, is always a good thing to do. WRITING Please write 3 sentences at least 4 times a week. Your child will need your help with this. They must write an article (a, an, the) at the beginning of every sentence. Then they must write a noun. Then they must write a verb. Good 1st grade is: The cat runs. Better. The fat cat funs. OR The cat runs up the hill. |
